Ultrasonography

Real-time ultrasound provides a safe, non-invasive way to evaluate your pet's internal organs and guide clinical decision-making. We offer a range of ultrasound services tailored to your pet's condition.

Cardiac Ultrasound (Echocardiography)

Echocardiography is the gold standard for assessing the structure and function of the heart. It provides detailed information about heart chamber size, valve function, blood flow and cardiac performance, allowing accurate diagnosis and monitoring of heart disease.

Common indications include:

  • Heart murmurs

  • Arrhythmias

  • Coughing or breathing difficulties

  • Exercise intolerance

  • Suspected congenital or acquired heart disease

Ultrasound heart contractility

Measuring the heart's contractility with ultrasound

Ultrasound PDA

Diagnosing a congentital heart condition called Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)

Abdominal Ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasound provides real-time evaluation of the abdominal organs and is an invaluable tool for investigating a wide range of medical conditions. It is commonly recommended for pets with vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, abdominal pain, abnormal blood tests or suspected internal disease.

Structures commonly assessed include:

  • Liver and gallbladder

  • Kidneys and urinary bladder

  • Spleen

  • Gastrointestinal tract

  • Pancreas

  • Adrenal glands

  • Reproductive organs

  • Abdominal lymph nodes

Ultrasound can also be used to guide fine needle aspiration or biopsy when appropriate.

Ultrasound Pancreas

Measuring the size of the pancreas

Ultrasound Adrenal glands

Detecting changes in the adrenal glands

Pregnancy Ultrasound

Pregnancy ultrasound provides a safe and non-invasive method to confirm pregnancy and assess fetal viability. It allows us to monitor fetal heartbeats, estimate gestational progress and identify potential concerns during pregnancy.

Pregnancy ultrasound may be recommended to:

  • Confirm pregnancy

  • Assess fetal viability

  • Monitor fetal development

  • Estimate stage of gestation

  • Investigate pregnancy-related concerns

For accurate litter size, abdominal radiographs performed later in pregnancy are generally more reliable than ultrasound.

Ultrasound-Guided Procedures

Ultrasound guidance enables many diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to be performed with greater precision and safety. By providing real-time visualisation of internal structures, it helps minimise complications while improving the accuracy of sampling and fluid drainage.

Ultrasound-guided procedures may include:

  • Thoracocentesis (pleural effusion drainage)

  • Abdominocentesis (abdominal fluid drainage)

  • Pericardiocentesis (pericardial effusion drainage)

  • Fine needle aspiration (FNA) of organs or masses

  • Core tissue biopsy (selected cases)

  • Urine collection (cystocentesis)

  •

These procedures are performed when clinically indicated to obtain diagnostic samples, relieve fluid accumulation, and guide appropriate treatment.

Mobile Ultrasonography Services for Dogs Victoria Breed Clubs

We also provide mobile ultrasound services for breed clubs affiliated with Dogs Victoria if you wish to hold it in conjunction with your Championship shows at KCC Park or Bulla Exhibition Centre. Contact us for more details!
